KEVIN'S PAINTED STONES

In creating the roses in the bottom right hand corner, I just dribbled different colors on the stone at the top and let it run over the stone. I didn't really have a clue what I was trying to do on that first one, but it did have an interesting look.

I use polyurethane which is the same stuff you seal wood floors with. I use MINWAX but I don't think the brand matters. I have the paint department add some tint just like you would if you were getting paint at the store. They don't always like to add tint to this stuff since it isn't normal. I paint the higher part of the stone first and just clean up any that might run off with Q-tips and let that part dry. After it is dry I fill in the background with the base color like the blue in the sky for the coyote. I don't paint it so much as I use the brush to move the paint to the edge of the higher parts.

Once I have the background filled in I will add the lighter color by using the brush to drop color onto the base color. I then hold the stone and tilt it back and forth so the lighter color starts to spread out, this gives it the loud effect.

Once it looks the way I think I like I set it down to dry. When I set it down so it can dry sometimes the colors blends a little more than I like and it doesn't look quite the way I wanted so it's kind of trial and error. Of course if it doesn't look any good I have only lost $.30 in concrete mix and some of my time. I really like the final effect I get this way. I know this is kind of quick but if you just play with it a while it does work.
